Paper Mache: A Fun Hobby to Help Kids and Teens Spend Less Time on Screens

Paper Mache: A Fun Hobby to Help Kids and Teens Spend Less Time on Screens

Screens have become part of everyday family life. Phones, tablets, computers, and televisions are useful for learning, communication, and entertainment, but sometimes it can feel as though kids and teens are spending more time looking at a screen than doing anything else.

Instead of making screen time the enemy, one simple approach is to give children something interesting to do away from the screen.

That is where hands-on hobbies can make a difference.

One hobby that is inexpensive, creative, and surprisingly versatile is paper mache.

Why Try Paper Mache?

Paper mache is one of those crafts that doesn't require a lot of expensive supplies. With paper, glue or paste, water, and a little imagination, you can create all kinds of things.

Kids can make animals, masks, bowls, decorations, characters, sculptures, and even their own imaginative creations.

The best part is that paper mache isn't about getting everything perfect.

It's about making something with your hands.

For children who are used to tapping a screen and instantly seeing a result, paper mache offers a completely different experience. They have to build something layer by layer, wait for it to dry, decide how to decorate it, and sometimes figure out how to fix something that didn't turn out quite as expected. And that's part of the fun.

A Hobby That Can Grow With a Child

Paper mache isn't only for little kids.

Younger children might enjoy making simple animals or colorful shapes, while older kids and teenagers can take the craft much further. They can experiment with sculpture, painting, textures, characters, room decorations, or projects based on their own interests.

A teenager who isn't interested in traditional children's crafts might actually enjoy the freedom of creating something unusual.

They could make a fantasy creature, a decorative container, a miniature sculpture, or even something inspired by a favorite story or game.

The possibilities are limited mostly by imagination.

A Screen-Free Activity Doesn't Have to Feel Like a Punishment

Sometimes when parents say, "Put your phone away," the response isn't exactly enthusiastic.

That's understandable.

Instead of simply taking away a device, why not introduce activities that are genuinely enjoyable?

A craft project can turn screen-free time into something to look forward to.

You might set aside an hour on a weekend afternoon for a family craft session. Put some old newspapers on the table, gather the supplies, and let everyone choose what they want to make.

There doesn't even have to be a finished project at the end of the day.

The process itself can be relaxing.

Paper Mache Can Also Become Family Time

One of the nice things about making crafts at home is that adults can participate too.

Parents don't have to be art experts. In fact, it can be more fun when everyone is learning together.

Imagine a table covered with newspaper, pieces of paper, containers of paste, paint, and several half-finished creations.

Someone is making a cat. Someone else is making a bowl.

Another person has decided to create a rather strange-looking creature that nobody can quite identify yet!

These simple moments can become opportunities to talk, laugh, and spend time together without everyone being distracted by their individual screens.

It Teaches More Than Just Crafting

Paper mache can quietly encourage several useful skills.

Children practice:

  • Creativity by deciding what to make
  • Patience while waiting for layers to dry
  • Problem-solving when something doesn't work
  • Fine motor skills while tearing, placing, and shaping paper
  • Planning when turning an idea into a finished object
  • Confidence when they see something they created themselves

There is also something satisfying about being able to say, "I made this."

In a world where so much of what we consume is digital and instantly available, creating something physical can feel surprisingly rewarding.

You Don't Need a Perfect Craft Room

Another advantage of paper mache is that you don't need a dedicated art studio.

A kitchen table or small workspace can work perfectly well. You can use recycled paper and materials you already have around the house, depending on the project.

This makes paper mache a good option for families who want to encourage creativity without spending a lot of money on another collection of gadgets, toys, or activities. You can start small.

Perhaps make one simple project together and see where the children's imagination takes them.

Looking for Paper Mache Ideas?

If you're looking for a starting point, Paper Crafts: Paper Mache, Arts and Crafts for Kids and Adults is one book you might want to explore.

It brings paper mache and paper crafting together in a way that can give both kids and adults ideas for hands-on projects. Rather than simply looking for another activity to keep children occupied, a book like this can be a starting point for discovering a hobby and encouraging creativity at home.

You can find Paper Crafts: Paper Mache, Arts and Crafts for Kids and Adults on Amazon if you'd like to take a look.

Making Room for Creativity at Home

Reducing screen time doesn't necessarily mean eliminating screens completely.

Technology has its place. Kids use it for school, learning, connecting with friends, and entertainment. The goal can simply be to create a healthier balance by making room for other experiences too.

Reading, drawing, baking, building, gardening, playing games, and crafting are all ways children can step away from a screen and engage with the world around them.

Paper mache happens to be one of those wonderfully simple activities that can turn a pile of paper into something completely new.

And perhaps that's the real appeal.

You start with something ordinary, use your hands and imagination, and end up with something that didn't exist before.

Sometimes, that's exactly the kind of break from the digital world that kids and adults need.

Welcome Back to Creations for You

After several years away from blogging, Creations for You is finally coming back to life!

It has been quite a while since I last published a post here. Like many things on the internet, a lot can change over the years—and this blog is no exception. As I started looking through some of my older posts, I noticed that some links no longer work, some pages are outdated, and some of the information and resources I previously shared are no longer relevant.

So, consider this a little fresh start for Creations for You.

A Fresh Start

Rather than trying to keep everything exactly as it was, I decided to begin updating the blog and gradually give it a new direction.

Some of the older posts may still remain while I work through them, but please excuse the broken links, outdated pages, and information that may no longer be current. I’ll be reviewing and updating things along the way.

There is also something exciting about returning to an old creative space after several years. Ideas have changed, interests have evolved, and there are so many new things to share.

What You'll Find Here

Creations for You is a place where I can share some of the things I create and the ideas that inspire me.

The blog will feature artworks, illustrations, photographs, designs, quotes, and print-on-demand creations, along with thoughts and life insights that I hope others might find meaningful or inspiring.

I may also share some of the creative process behind my work, interesting ideas, helpful resources, and stories behind particular designs.

Not every creation has to be perfect or profound. Sometimes a simple illustration, a beautiful photograph, or a few words can express something that is difficult to put into a longer conversation.

More Posts Are Coming Soon

After such a long break, I'm looking forward to getting back into the habit of creating and sharing.

I'll be publishing new blog posts soon, so this post is really the beginning of a new chapter for Creations for You.

In the meantime, I'm also working on cleaning up the older content, checking links, updating pages, and deciding which posts are worth keeping and which ones need a little refresh.

Thank you for stopping by, whether you've been here before or this is your first visit.

Welcome to the new Creations for You. I hope you'll come back and see what's being created next!

Learn How to Draw

Learning How to Draw: Why Kids Should Start Practicing Young

Drawing is something many children naturally enjoy. Give a child a pencil and some paper, and they may spend hours creating people, animals, houses, flowers, and imaginative worlds of their own.

If your child shows an interest in drawing, encouraging that interest while they are young can be a wonderful way to help them develop their creativity and artistic skills.

The goal doesn't have to be creating perfect drawings. Like any skill, drawing improves with practice, patience, and encouragement.

Every Artist Starts With Simple Shapes

One of the easiest ways for children to learn how to draw is to start with simple shapes.

Circles, squares, triangles, ovals, and lines can become the foundation for countless drawings. A circle can become a face, an oval can become an animal's body, and a few simple lines can turn into a tree, flower, or character.

Learning to break complicated objects into simple shapes makes drawing feel much less intimidating.

Instead of thinking, "I don't know how to draw a dog," a child can learn to think:

"I can draw a few shapes and put them together to make a dog."

That small change in approach can make learning much more enjoyable.

Practice Makes Drawing Easier

Children shouldn't feel that they need to be naturally talented to become good at drawing.

Drawing is a skill that can be developed over time. The more children practice, the more comfortable they can become with holding a pencil, creating lines and shapes, observing objects, and putting their ideas on paper.

Regular practice even just a few minutes at a time can make a difference.

And perhaps most importantly, children can learn that making mistakes is part of learning.

A line might not look right. A character might turn out differently than expected. That's okay!

They can simply try again.

A Step-by-Step Approach Can Help

For children who are just beginning to learn how to draw, having a step-by-step guide can make the process easier.

Rather than staring at a blank piece of paper and wondering what to draw, children can follow simple instructions and gradually build a picture.

This is why I created a step-by-step drawing workbook for kids.

The workbook provides drawing practice that children can follow one step at a time. It is designed to give young artists something they can practice with while building confidence in their drawing abilities.

Encourage Their Interest While They're Young

If your child already enjoys drawing, this can be a great time to encourage that interest.

You don't need expensive art supplies or professional lessons to get started. Some paper, pencils, crayons, or colored pencils and a little time for practice can provide plenty of opportunities for creativity.

You can also encourage children by asking them to draw things they enjoy—animals, characters, nature, toys, houses, or anything else that captures their imagination.

The important thing is to let them enjoy the process.

Drawing Is More Than Just Making Pictures

Drawing can also give children a way to express their ideas and imagination.

They can create something that exists only in their minds and turn it into something they can see on paper. Over time, they may develop their own style and discover the types of things they most enjoy drawing.

Whether a child eventually becomes an artist or simply keeps drawing as a hobby, the skills they practice can become a meaningful part of their creative development.

Ready to Start Drawing?

If your child has an interest in drawing, why not encourage them to start practicing now?

They don't have to be perfect. They just need to start.

With simple step-by-step practice, patience, and plenty of opportunities to draw, children can gradually build their skills—and, hopefully, discover just how much fun creating art can be.

My step-by-step drawing workbook for kids is available on Amazon and can be a fun resource for young artists who want to practice drawing one step at a time.

Give them a pencil, give them a place to create, and let their imagination take it from there.

You don't necessarily need to spend a lot of money to make a cat lover happy.

If you're putting together a gift basket, you can also combine several inexpensive cat themed items to create a personalized cat lover's gift box.

Gifts for People Who Simply Love Cats

The best cat gifts don't necessarily have to be practical. Sometimes they're simply about celebrating something the recipient loves.

If someone has a favorite animal, giving them something that reflects that interest can make the gift feel more personal.

And let's face it, cat people tend to be very proud of their love for cats!

From cute illustrations to useful everyday items, there are plenty of ways to find a gift that matches their personality.

Find the Perfect Cute Cat Gift

Whether you're shopping for a lifelong cat lover, a new pet parent, a friend who can't resist a cute kitten, or someone who simply enjoys adorable things, cat themed gifts are a fun choice for almost any occasion.

Start with what they enjoy most, such as cute designs, funny sayings, practical items, home décor, or artwork, and you're much more likely to find something they'll love.

Because when it comes to cat lovers, you can never really have too many cute cats!
