The Sad T-Rex: A Heartwarming Story About Being Yourself
Sometimes, being different can make a child feel like they don't quite fit in.
That simple feeling was the inspiration behind my picture book, The Sad T-Rex, a gentle story about self-acceptance, friendship, and discovering that being different can be something special.
Meet Tim, the T-Rex
He wonders why he doesn't seem to fit in and struggles with the feeling that perhaps something about him needs to change.
But as the story unfolds, Tim experiences a surprising moment that helps him see himself in a new way.
He begins to discover that he doesn't have to be like everyone else to be wonderful.
He just needs to find his own kind of roar.
A Story About Being Yourself
I created and illustrated The Sad T-Rex with young children in mind, but its message is one that can resonate with anyone.
Children are naturally curious about the world around them, and as they grow, they begin to notice differences between themselves and others. Sometimes those differences can make them feel left out or unsure of themselves.
Stories can provide a gentle way to talk about those feelings.
Through Tim's experience, children can explore ideas such as:
- It's okay to be different.
- You don't have to change who you are to belong.
- Everyone has something special about them.
- A good friend can help us see ourselves differently.
- Sometimes our differences are actually our strengths.
Why I Chose to Illustrate the Story
As the creator and illustrator of The Sad T-Rex, I wanted the pictures to be an important part of the storytelling.
For young readers, illustrations can communicate feelings even before they can fully express those feelings with words. Tim's expressions, his surroundings, and the little moments throughout the story help children connect with what he is experiencing.
I also wanted Tim to feel approachable and lovable rather than intimidating. After all, even a T-Rex can have a soft side!
Finding Your Own Roar
One of the ideas I hope children take away from Tim's story is that there isn't just one way to be confident, brave, or special.
Your "roar" might be loud.
Or it might be quiet.
It might be your creativity, your kindness, your imagination, your curiosity, or simply the way you make someone else smile.
Being yourself doesn't mean you will never have difficult days. It means learning that you are still worthy and special on those days.
A Gentle Story for Ages 4–8
The Sad T-Rex is designed for children ages 4–8 and can be enjoyed as a read-aloud story at bedtime, during story time, or simply as a quiet moment to share with a child.
I hope Tim's story encourages children to look at themselves with a little more kindness and reminds them that being different isn't something to hide—it's part of what makes each of us unique.
And perhaps, after reading Tim's story, your little reader will be encouraged to discover their own special roar, too.
The Sad T-Rex is a book I created and illustrated with the hope of giving children a simple, comforting reminder: It's okay to be you.
